For this assignment, we were tasked with writing a lesson plan for improvisation based off of materials from a piece of music while also using california arts standards. This lesson was a great opportunity to get to work with the arts standards, and to get used to writing lesson plans to prepare for my TPAs in the future. I chose the song Sidewalk Learnin' by Gary P. Gilroy, and I had an absolute blast teaching and planning this lesson. It made me so excited to see my class take brave steps into improvisation and embrace learning together without fear. Linked below is my lesson plan, as well as my materials and rubric for the lesson.
For my Handbook Project I was tasked with creating a handbook for a hypothetical middle/high school. This project really showed me the amount of time it takes to prepare materials for my students, and I am so glad that when I develop my handbook in the future I will have this as a good starting place.
In this project, I chose 30 pieces of band/orchestra literature in 3 categories: Standard Orchestra Lit, Literature from Underrepresented Populations, and Literature of my Choice. This project was really eye opening to how much valuable music is out there if you are willing to do a little digging and find the best music for your students. I think that this is a really valuable resource to have prepared and I hope to use it to select repertoire for my students in the future.
For my Unit Plan, I took my chosen composition and planned out all of the information and a few lessons that I would need to use it in one of my enesembles. This plan has details about the piece, objectives, California arts standards, and lesson plans that are aligned with objectives and standards. This unit plan is a great preperation tool for TPAs and really helped me understand how to look at and apply the arts standards in my teaching. Inside the document, you will see all information, objectives, and 2 lesson plans.
For this project we were assigned a group of students, and got to compose, refine, rehearse, and perform a piece of music with their input. This was a difficult assignment, but really highlighted the importance and skill of infusing student input into my teaching. My composition is titled Bass, and tells the story of a fish who has been caught. Working with these students to compose and perform collaboratively was a great experience and I hope to do a similar project with my high school students soon. Attached below is my materials and score, as well as my reflection.
